3 investments worth making
Investing your time and money into things is important… the point of an investment is to give you time/money/energy in the HOPE that you will get a return on investment. So that you make a profit… a profit of money, of your knowledge, or your success etc.
And investments can come in many forms.
Below are my top 3 investments that I believe are truly worth making.
Yourself
Mhmm you heard me, there is nothing more important than investing time and money in yourself.
You cannot escape from the word ‘self-care’ nowadays; every blog circulating the web at the moment is about the importance of self-care, but there is a reason why…
Because self-care is important.
Spending money and time looking after yourself should be your number one priority in life.
I’m not talking about spending £199 on a pair of Egyptian cotton pyjamas. I’m just talking about looking after your mental, emotional and physical well-being on a daily basis.
Top money-saving tip: Self-care doesn’t even need to be expensive because a lot of the simple things are free:
An early bedtime
A walk in the park
A 10-minute mediation session
Listening to a podcast
Dancing around in your room to Whitney Houston
A small investment with the biggest reward of all… sanity and better mental health.
Books
Buy books and read, read, read.
One of the best ways to educate yourself on the world, widen your vocabulary to articulate yourself better and expand your mind is to read books.
It is one of those goals that everyone has. The words ‘buy/read a book’ sit at number one on the ‘to-do list’ charts of many people and over-time gets magically pushed closer to the bottom of the pile (no pun intended). Until it disappears, only to reappear on said list on 1st Jan [insert new year here].
In 2017, I set myself a task to read 12 books in 12 months and I fell in love with reading and regretted not starting sooner.
There are a frikkin’ trillion ton of books available (which can be overwhelming if like me you struggle making decisions – I basically have a nervy B every time I finish a book and need to find a new one) but it is great because it means there is something for everyone.
And “I don’t know what type of books I like to read” is really not a good enough excuse not to read… if you don’t start reading books, how you gonna know which genre you do and don’t like?
Top money-saving tip: Buying books doesn’t need to be expensive, you could save money by:
Buying pre-owned books using online sites like World Of Books (free UK shipping)
Check out local charity shops or second-hand bookstores
Get a book-swapping-club going with your friends (you all buy one book each then swap when you are all finished)
The greatest danger for most of us is not that our aim is too high and we miss it, but that it is too low and we reach it. Michelangelo
Sleep
I always used to think I was invincible because I could ‘get by’ on about 3-4 hours of sleep every night. I used to think scrolling on tumblr (before insta was a thing) or watching re-runs of Friends until 3am then getting up for school (and in my later years, work) at 7am was far more valuable than actually sleeping.
Oh, how little ol’ young Laura was mistaken.
Sleep is one of the foundations for a healthy life and for that, you need a great routine and bedtime essentials to help you get the sleep you need.
Top money-saving tip: Bedtime routines do not need to break the bank and keep you up at night at the thought of the cost:
Use the Calm app – the #1 app for mediation and mindfulness with techniques for sleep and stress reduction (the free version gives you access to a range of episodes, night-time stories and background sounds).
Bedtime yoga – a little stretch in low lighting to relaxing music is enough to help your body wind down (especially if you sit at a desk all day) – check out this YouTube video for some guidance.
A relaxing bath – have a pre-bedtime scrub in the tub with lavender oil (lavender oil helps you fall asleep faster and enhances your quality of sleep during the night)
You literally cannot put a price on a good night’s sleep.
Happy investing!
